What is a B.A.R.K. Ranger?
B.A.R.K. Ranger is the National Park Service’s program for visiting pets. The letters stand for four rules: Bag your pet’s waste, Always leash your pet, Respect wildlife, and Know where you can go. At these programs, a ranger walks owners and dogs through the pledge, and dogs can earn a badge, tag or certificate, depending on the park.

Bonus: meet Denali’s sled dogs
If you’re in Alaska this winter, Denali National Park’s sled dog kennels are open on weekends from 1 to 4 p.m. through May 9, 2027. It’s a drop-in visit to meet the park’s working sled dogs and talk with a ranger. See the park’s kennels page before you go.
Before you go: checklist
- ☐ Leash (6 feet or shorter is a safe default; Biscayne requires it for its event)
- ☐ Waste bags, water and a collapsible bowl
- ☐ ID tag and up-to-date microchip details
- ☐ A small bag of soft treats for the pledge and photos
- ☐ Check the park’s website or call the day before for weather changes
- ☐ Know the park’s general pet rules: many parks allow leashed pets in developed areas and on some trails, but not everywhere
Busy events with lots of new dogs can be a lot for a nervous dog. If your dog is reactive, a quieter weekday walk in the same park may be a better choice. Our guide How to Socialize a Puppy has tips on reading your dog’s body language around other dogs.
