Winter is sled dog season. Denali National Park in Alaska keeps a team of working sled dogs, and their kennels stay open to visitors on winter weekends. The 2027 Iditarod is already on the calendar. Here’s what to know if you want to see working sled dogs this winter, in person or from home.

In winter, rangers and the dogs travel by sled to patrol the park, check trail conditions, help winter visitors and protect the park’s wilderness, according to the NPS kennels page. Most of the Denali Park Road is closed in winter, so check the park’s winter access and road status before you drive up.
Bringing your own dog to Denali in winter?
The park says visitors who own their own dogs are welcome to mush or skijor in the park in winter. Regular pet rules still apply elsewhere in the park: pets must be leashed and are limited to certain areas such as park roads, parking areas and campgrounds. Check the park’s pet page for current rules before you go.
Watch from home: the puppy cam
Denali raises its own future sled dogs, and the park runs a puppy webcam so you can watch litters grow up. Look for it on the park’s kennels page.
Mark the date: the 2027 Iditarod
The official Iditarod site lists the next race start as March 6, 2027. The race runs about 1,000 miles from the Anchorage area to Nome. Mushers began signing up in June. Race-week schedules, including the ceremonial start, are posted on iditarod.com closer to the date.
Tips for winter outings with your own dog
- Short-coated, small and senior dogs lose heat quickly; a fitted coat helps on long stops.
- Check paws for ice balls between the toes and wipe off road salt and de-icer after walks.
- Keep your dog leashed near sled dog yards and trails; working dogs are focused and can be startled.
- A parked car can get dangerously cold in winter, so don’t leave your dog waiting in it.
